We aim to meet the needs of all children. Children who are experiencing difficulty with aspects of their learning or children working well above their age expectations, or those who have emotional or behavioural difficulties will be given extra support. This support can be either through one to one support or in small groups, in or out of the classroom,…

What are Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

The new draft SEN guidelines define SEN as follows:

A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.  A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if they:

  • Have a significantly greater difficulty or disability in learning than the majority of others of the same age: or
  • have a disability which prevents of hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions.

Our approach to SEN

We aim to meet the needs of every child, regardless of their needs or background.

If a child is identified as having SEN, we provide more or different help so they can overcome the barriers to their learning.

We will offer extra support to children who:

  • are experiencing difficulty with aspects of their learning
  • are working well above their age expectations
  • have emotional or behavioural difficulties.

The type of support we offer depends on the needs of the individual child. It can be either through one-to-one support or in small groups; in or out of the classroom; delivered by the school itself or an outside agency and temporary or longer-term.

We also offer one-to-one mentoring to support pupils with their emotional wellbeing and social development.

An educational psychologist visits school regularly to advise staff and help children with more severe special needs.

We also work closely with specialists in behaviour and speech and language, and we have a school nurse who visits the school every week.
